Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. We offer a variety of opportunities for individuals and groups to get involved and make a difference in the lives of those we serve. Ophthalmologists and other physicians, optometrists, nurses, technicians are particularly needed. We especially encourage those who have a passion for teaching to contact us.
Helping people regain their eyesight is a life changing experience for all involved.
Join our team and change lives and the world for the better!
To eliminate unecessary blindness in Africa, what is needed is an army of well-trained local African eye surgeons, who have long careers, successfully operating on their fellow Africans. Our main goal will be to help create and maintain this army to fight blindness.
Because of the relatively low number of ophthalmologists trained in most sub-Saharan African countries, it is imperative that those who are trained have excellent diagnostic and surgical skills, good equipment, and mentoring to help them withstand the rigors of medical practice in difficult conditions.
Unfortunately, none of these indispensable ingredients are typically available to local ophthalmologists in the areas we will visit. Statistics show that in these areas, that most newly trained ophthalmologists quit practice within one year of leaving their training program, because of inadequate training, equipment and support. We plan to help improve their situation by helping in all of these areas.
By building a teaching hospital and clinic in Zimba, we will train students, nurses, technicians, young ophthalmologists in training, and established community ophthalmologists in practice. We will continue to support ophthalmologists throughout their careers with continuing education, support, and mentoring. Most importantly, we will train LOCAL teaching ophthalmologists, ophthalmic nurses, and technicians to perform this outreach to ensure that their colleagues have the support they need in the long run, and adapted to local conditions and needs.
Our plan is to improve the skills and confidence of both ophthalmologists-in-training and those who have been in practice. If their careers can be lengthened, and they can become more efficient, better surgeons, they can begin to reduce the huge burden of untreated blindness in their countries. If ophthalmology as a profession can become a career that is perceived by young Africans to be a specialty that is well supported with good training, equipment, and mentors, then more local aspiring doctors will turn in this direction, and in time the plague of blindness will be mastered.
Founded in 2023 by ophthalmologists Dr. John Bosetti and Dr. Nancy Jameson, ESI works to eliminate blindness worldwide. We focus on teaching local doctors and staff and providing the infrastructure to allow local, sustainable eye surgery for the benefit of all.
We work with local and international foundations, hospitals, clinics, governments and individual doctors and staff to deliver the highest quality care locally. If you have a passion to help partner contact us today!
We are building a team of individuals who have a passion to teach and make a positive pact on the lives of thousands of people every year, and with time, make the world a better place. If this is you, join us!
